The illuminated historic buildings of Shanghai’s Bund beside the Huangpu River at dusk.

Shanghai

Shanghai makes a memorable gateway to Jiangnan: a city of classical gardens, shikumen lanes, neighbourhood cafés and a working river lined with contrasting skylines. A day here can move from a quiet garden view to the breadth of the Bund.

Why Shanghai

Yu Garden offers a close view of Jiangnan garden design through rockeries, pools and pavilions in the old city. Around it, the City God Temple district has busy lanes and places to sample local food. Continue towards Nanjing Road and the Bund to read another chapter of Shanghai through its commercial streets, historic riverfront buildings and the towers across the Huangpu.

Xintiandi’s restored shikumen lanes show how traditional Shanghai housing has been adapted for contemporary dining and shopping. Around Anfu Road, leafy streets, older houses and cafés offer a smaller-scale city walk. Leave some time between the landmarks to browse, sit down and notice the details that make each neighbourhood distinct.

Practical tips

  • Confirm Yu Garden opening arrangements and any reserved visits for your dates; allow extra time around busy old-town streets.
  • Share your exact arrival and departure airport when planning. Pudong and Hongqiao are different airports, and city or intercity transfers need adequate time.
  • Keep city walks flexible in rain, heat or humidity, and carry a light layer for breezy evenings beside the river.
